Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
A Roux-en-Y bypass makes the stomach smaller by creating a small pouch at the top of the stomach. The smaller stomach pouch is connected directly to the middle part of the small intestine. Patients will feel full more quickly, reducing the amount of food eaten and the calories consumed. Bypassing part of the intestine also results in fewer calories being absorbed.
Roux-en-Y is performed as a laparoscopic procedure and an open procedure. A tiny video camera and surgical instruments are inserted through small incisions in the abdomen while the procedure is viewed on a video monitor. Laparoscopic procedures are less invasive and performed whenever possible because they result in reduced hospitalization, shorter recovery periods, and fewer complications.

Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding (LAP-BAND©)
In this surgery, a gastric band is inserted through a tiny laparoscopic incision in the abdomen and placed around the upper part of the stomach. The band has a balloon around the inside that is adjustable and can be inflated or deflated after the operation. Inflating the band creates a smaller opening for food to pass through resulting in fullness more quickly, less food eaten and fewer calories consumed. Lap-Banding is typically performed as a laparoscopic procedure, which helps reduce length of stay and recovery time.
